He starts off selecting the wood
The wood he most often uses is Maple Burl (Acer macrophyllum),or
box elder burl (Acer negundo). These both have has swirly unpredictable patterns of grain.
Maple Burl uses the heart wood is the area under the clip in the wood. Pens made with Maple Burl are desirable because of these swilrling lines. This lovely wood grows in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon and some places in California. Burls have the most fascinating grain of all woods which makes them the most sought after of all pens. It is a delight to hold, smooth and form fitting to the hand.
Box elder burl, also known as ash-leafed maple and Manitoba
maple is a member of the maple family.
The fungus-causes coloring present in some trees makes box elder prized
for wood projects.
Schermerhorn personally selects the most beautiful woods
he can find, then sands the wood in 7 steps. Afterwards he adds 2 coats
of sealer, then 3 coats of a Special Turning Polish. This results in a beautiful
durable finish. The hi-gloss finish is hand rubbed and massaged into the
wood. This brings forth a deep luster which is absolutely beautiful.
